Today we announced Olympic Champion Joanna Rowsell as our latest Wattbike Ambassador. We’re really proud to have Joanna on board here at Wattbike and we look forward to bringing you some of her favourite Wattbike sessions.
We first met up with Joanna at the 2012 Cycle Show in Birmingham where we discussed her training and competition schedule. She was very much in demand as it was barely a month since the famous trio of Rowsell, King and Trott had obliterated the field in the Olympic Velodrome during the Women’s Team Pursuit.
2012 was the culmination of many years hard work which had seen Joanna win multiple World Championships. The London Olympics was something special so it was a real privilege when she pulled her Olympic Gold medal out to show us during her photo-shoot at Wattbike HQ. It’s difficult to describe what it’s like to touch an Olympic Gold medal but for the athlete that golden disc must contain so many memories and emotions.
As part of British Cycling’s Olympic Podium Programme, Joanna is no stranger to the Wattbike. Earlier this year she wrote us a great blog on why she chooses to use a Wattbike instead of training on a turbo. Many of the reasons she talks of are ones we hear time and time again from Wattbike owners when they come back to see us at the shows we exhibit at across the country.
You’ll see some of our new advertising featuring Joanna in cycling magazines this winter and throughout 2014 and we can’t wait to let you in a few secrets on what makes her tick when it comes to training. We’ll also have a video interview for you in the next couple of weeks.
So, it’s a warm welcome to Joanna and a big good luck for her upcoming races at the UCI Track World Cup in Mexico this weekend.

Wattbike announces Olympic Champion Joanna Rowsell as Ambassador
Nottingham, United Kingdom, 5th December 2013 - Wattbike is pleased to announce Olympic Champion Joanna Rowsell as an Ambassador for the company. As a key member of British Cycling’s Olympic Podium Programme, Joanna is no stranger to the Wattbike and today’s announcement enhances Wattbike’s position as the market leader in power-based training.
The Wattbike played a key role in Joanna’s rapid return from injury in August 2013 following a heavy crash at the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix and has helped her track season start with a new World Record as part of the Great Britain Women’s Team Pursuit squad.
Joanna’s indoor season moves on to Mexico for the next round of the UCI Track World Cup in early December while she is also looking ahead to the big target of the track cycling season, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.
Joanna, the current British National Time Trial Champion, said: “Training indoors is where the hard work is done to achieve the big goals on the track and the road. Having been a part of the British Cycling programme for many years I’m very familiar with the Wattbike and training to power is by far the most effective and efficient way for any cyclist to improve on a bike. The Wattbike feels just like riding a road bike yet allows me to train at very specific intensities without the interruption of poor weather, busy traffic and unsuitable terrain. I’m looking forward to a winter where I can simply focus on high quality training on the Wattbike alongside my racing commitments.”
The Wattbike brings elite-level training to the home and gym floor, enabling cyclists of all abilities to make the most of their physiology. Using her Wattbike, Joanna is able to utilise a combination of power, heart-rate and cadence to ensure she is training at exactly the right intensity for her desired outcome.
Alex Skelton, Marketing Director at Wattbike, said: “Partnering with Joanna was an easy decision for us as it quickly became obvious that she has a real passion for learning and understanding how to get the most out of training. For us to have a World and Olympic Champion as an Ambassador enhances our position as the market-leader when it comes to training with power. Joanna is a very special athlete but we know that cyclists of any ability can improve using the same training methods as her on a Wattbike.”
As the market-leader in power-based training, Wattbike has a long-standing connection to elite cycling in Great Britain and as the only indoor bike ever to be endorsed by British Cycling, has played a part in the outstanding successes at recent World Championships and Olympic Games.
The ambassadorial role will see Joanna become the face of Wattbike over the next 12 months, appearing at events, in the press and via social media where she will be sharing some of her favourite Wattbike sessions.
