Performance. It means different things to different people. For some, it means consistent training to achieve a podium finish. For others, it means working on their fitness everyday to ensure they can live life to the fullest.
In the latest instalment of our ‘performance portraits’, we caught up with award-winning blogger and multi-discipline cyclist, Juliet Elliot. She's been riding on a Wattbike Atom since the start of 2018, so we asked about her inspirations to ride and training.
What Inspired You To Start cycling?
I started cycling to get to work; it was just a means to an end. I liked the wind in my hair, getting a bit of exercise and it was better than the tube. But I can’t say I was immediately blown away by riding a rubbish heavy bike in heavy London traffic!
When I got a fixed gear bike, as my geared bikes kept getting stolen, that changed overnight. I really enjoyed the process of putting that bike together - it was a road frame conversion - and when I rode it for the first time I was blown away by how fun it was.
What is it about cycling that has kept you coming back? Why it is so important to you?
It’s so diverse. There are so many routes, bikes, disciplines - so it’s always new, fun and challenging. I like pushing myself right to the edge of my ability, whether that’s racing, riding jumps or downhill mountain biking. You’re never finished with it because you can always get better, so it becomes an obsession to make those gains.
What does being obsessed with performance mean to you?
For me, it’s fussing over details and spending a lot time reading up on things such as training, conditioning and nutrition. I get seriously ‘in to’ things and I really enjoy learning how and why things work. I get agitated if I can’t train and stress a bit over getting it all right.
Are you training for anything specific right now?
I’m doing a few different races: road racing, crits and cross-country mountain bike racing. I’ll maybe do some gravel races if I have time. I’ll be doing the Étape too, so I need to make sure I don’t just focus on short races.
What is your most used feature on the wattbike atom?
Definitely Bluetooth third party app connection. I like using it with Zwift.
What else is on your cycling bucket list for 2018 and beyond?
This year I’ll be getting out to Switzerland to ride with my sponsors, ASSOS. I love going to Lugano and riding to Lake Como, and in the mountains around Ticino. I’d really like to do more cycle touring but I never seem to have the time. Other than that, there are plenty of places I’d like to revisit, such as Girona and Nice.
And finally, what’s one piece of kit you couldn’t live without?
Hmm, that’s a tough question. Probably a decent pair of sunglasses. I get incredibly watery eyes so I really have to wear them. But more than that, I just like putting on a fancy pair of shades – it makes me feel good when I head out on a ride.
