Wattbike’s Top 3 Late Summer Sportives

Whilst we’re huge advocates of training indoors even we know there is nothing better than a late summer sportive. With balmy conditions, enough daylight hours to take on longer challenges and the opportunity to beat your mates, there aren’t many cycling experiences which beat them.

The summer, however, is drawing to a close and it will soon be time to hang up those short sleeve jerseys in favour of arm warmers and waterproofs. So make the most of the final days of summer, go and ride one of our top three late summer sportives:

1. L’Etape London by le Tour de France

When: Sunday 27th September

Why ride: L’Etape London offers the atmosphere and experience of le Tour de France, right in the heart of the City.

The event features many of the roads made famous in Stage Three of the 2014 Tour de France and culminates with a lap of honour around the Lee Valley Velopark, making you feel like an accomplished Olympian. The event has short (42 mile), medium (92 mile) and long (117 mile) distances, so there is something to suit everyone.

2. Wiggle Exmouth Ex-Terminator

When: Saturday 22nd August

Why ride: Want to put your summer training to the ultimate test? Have a go at the Wiggle Exmouth Ex-Terminator.

You’ll enjoy unspoiled sea views as you ride along Sidmouth seafront, then with your lungs filled with sea air you’ll head inland to experience the quintessentially British countryside. Don’t be fooled by the stunning scenery though, the Exmouth Ex-Terminator Epic features over 7,300ft of climbing, so it’s not one for the feint hearted!

3. Wiggle New Forest 100

When: Saturday 19th September & Sunday 20th September

Why ride: The Wiggle New Forest 100 is a sell out event and has been dubbed one of the biggest and best sportives in the UK. Set against the stunning scenery of the New Forest National Park and with typical speed limits of 20mph and very few cars, you’ll be in the perfect place to reflect upon your summer training as you try and beat your personal best.

More than just a simple sportive, the Wiggle New Forest 100 provides the full package with post event entertainment, a hog roast, refreshments and live music - the perfect end to a summer of cycling.
