First ever Olympic Esports Series

June 28, 2023 1 min read

Background

On 23 June 2023, history was made in the world of esports as Singapore proudly hosted the first-ever Olympic Esports Series. Presented by the Olympics and Zwift, the event brought together the best cycling esports athletes who had previously competed in the UCI Esports World Championship in Glasgow.

The new challenging format involved the 16 riders being split into mixed gender teams where they competed in back to back Zwift races. There were six rounds: a women's and men's elimination race (13.3km), which featured two players per team, a women's and men's sprint race (3.2km), which features one player per team, and a women's and men's climbing race (2.7km), which also each involve one player per team. Points will be awarded for each race, with the team with the most points being crowned overall winners.

The importance of technology

At the heart of this groundbreaking event were twenty Wattbike Atoms bought by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the athletes to race on. The Wattbike Atom, known for its accurate and reliable technology, measures every pedal stroke, making it the perfect choice for the instantaneous and fast-paced challenges faced in esports racing. The bikes took centre stage at the event, showing just how immersive and interactive Zwift racing can be.
