James Golding's Return to the Race Across America

June 10, 2024 3 min read

As 11th June approaches, the cycling world turns its eyes to the Race Across America (RAAM), one of the most gruelling endurance challenges on the planet. This year, the anticipation is particularly high as British cyclist James Golding returns to the race with a bold mission: to become the first British rider to win RAAM. James's story is one of unparalleled resilience, determination, and an unyielding spirit that has inspired countless individuals around the world.

The Unmatched Challenge of RAAM

RAAM is no ordinary race. Spanning 3,100 miles from the West to the East coast of America, it traverses 12 states, climbing over 54,000 feet through the Sierra, Rocky, and Appalachian mountains. Cyclists face extreme weather conditions, from freezing temperatures in the mountains to scorching 50+ degrees in the desert. Completing this race is a formidable task; winning it is a feat achieved by only the most elite endurance cyclists. James Golding is determined to do just that within nine days.

James Golding: A Testament to Human Spirit

James’s journey to this point is nothing short of miraculous. Diagnosed with cancer twice, at one point with less than a 5% chance of survival, James endured emergency surgeries, a coma, and a harrowing recovery process. He lost over half his body weight and had to relearn how to walk. Yet, through sheer willpower, he not only survived but thrived, discovering cycling as a new passion and lifeline.

Since his recovery, James has cycled across countries and continents, competed in over 50 multi-day events, and set the Guinness Seven Day World Record for the longest distance cycled. He has also raised over £3 million for charity, inspiring others with his story through public speaking, school visits, and personal mentorship.

A Team Effort

James’s quest to win RAAM is supported by a dedicated team of professionals and friends who share his vision. From his coach and road manager Dean Downing, a former pro rider and national champion, to his sports therapist Charlie Ward and sports psychologist Phil Kelly, James’s team is a blend of expertise and unwavering support. This cohesive unit has been pivotal in his preparations, helping him push boundaries and reach new heights.

Overcoming Setbacks

In 2022, James was a favourite to win RAAM, making impressive progress until a sudden illness forced him to withdraw. This setback, however, did not diminish his resolve. Instead, it provided him with the perspective and renewed passion to return stronger in 2024. His recent fourth-place finish in the European Championships marked the beginning of his comeback, showcasing his enduring competitiveness and determination.

Inspiring Others

James's journey is not just about personal achievement; it’s about inspiring others to overcome their own challenges. His philosophy, "One Step At A Time," resonates deeply with those who face adversity. James’s story has touched many lives, including a 15-year-old boy who found hope and a new hero in James after hearing his story during a school visit.

The Road Ahead

As James prepares for RAAM 2024, he continues to inspire and engage his supporters through various initiatives. The "RAAM Challenge," a corporate event where companies race James virtually on Wattbikes while raising funds for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, exemplifies his commitment to giving back and making a difference.

James’s goal for RAAM is clear: to win, set new records, and, most importantly, demonstrate that with resilience, courage, and determination, anything is possible. His story is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to overcome the greatest odds and emerge victorious.

James Golding’s return to RAAM is more than just a race; it’s a powerful story of resilience and inspiration. As he gears up for this monumental challenge, his journey serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for all. Whether he clinches the title or not, James has already won in the hearts of many, proving that with the right mindset and support, the seemingly impossible becomes achievable.

Join us in supporting James on his road to RAAM 2024, and witness a true champion's spirit in action.
